Mixing instructions
  1. Place the water in a mason jar.
  2. Wearing safety goggles, add the hydrated lime. Cover the jar and shake a few times.
  3. Remove the lid and add the quark.
  4. Blend with an immersion blender or whisk until smooth and creamy (~20 seconds).
  5. Add the pigment and blend again (~20 seconds).
  6. Brush on immediately with a synthetic brush. Sand after the first coat, then apply three more.

Use the paint immediately and discard leftovers after a few days.

Quark Recipe (optional)

Can't find quark at the store? Make your own from skim milk and vinegar. A quart of skim milk yields about 4 oz of quark.

Quark instructions
  1. Heat the skim milk gently until just below a simmer.
  2. Stir in the vinegar; the milk will curdle within a minute or two.
  3. Strain through cheesecloth and let drip until it reaches a thick, ricotta-like consistency.
  4. Total elapsed time: about 15 minutes.

The process is flexible and forgiving โ€” small yield variations are normal.
